Why I'm a fan of GLP-1s
Curious about a holistic nutritionist's take on GLP-1s? I'm A FAN.
My husband was surprised to hear me say this. He asked me three times to make sure he heard it right. His main argument is that it's not a long-term solution, therefore it doesn't solve the root issue of health and weight problems. This is sound. But I can't help but look at him and think, "well, you're not a woman."
While his intentions are good, he doesn't have the lived experience of a woman. Most of us have dieted our entire lives. Most of us have diet trauma passed down from generation to generation. Most of us are literally sick and tired. Most of us are emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually exhausted. We're just tired.
And you know what tired people do?
They desperately seek EASE. When I'm too tired to cook, I order out. When I'm too tired to exercise, I skip a meal. When I'm too tired to keep trying so damn hard to keep my weight down and feel confident, I buy weight loss teas and supplements. We will do just about anything to make things EASIER.
I explained to my husband that most of my clients have been on some form of diet for over 30 years. To be constantly thinking about our bodies, what to eat, what not to eat, our confidence plummeting, our energy depleting, our joy being wrapped up in how we look and how we feel about ourselvesâit's exhausting. It's frustrating. And we have the diet industry right there reminding us that we still need to fix ourselves. As if something will just always be inherently wrong with the way we are.
We then visit the doctor, and they confirm: you're overweight, your blood sugar is high, you need to watch what you eat.
Enter: GLP-1s
Here we have a solution to most of our major health issues, and it works remarkably fast. In a matter of months, you could be 2 dress sizes down. You'll be eating less because you have no appetite. And none of it feels hard. It feels easy. You can eat what you want, you'll naturally eat very little, and you'll drop weight like magic.
I don't have a problem with this for a few reasons: you're losing extra weight that's holding you down, you're feeling more confident, you appear happier, you're enjoying your life, your numbers are improving, you're not feeling deprived, and you're finally relieved of the anxiety and stress around dieting. These are all wonderful things.
Now if you're waiting for me to tell you the bad news⌠I don't have any. You can be happy and healthy and thrive with these medications. The only important thing is to get proper nutrition, meaning eat healthy when you do eat, start or keep exercising so you don't lose all your muscle mass (common), and remember to take care of your body.
Every week I'll be writing newsletters with my thoughts on blood sugar, insulin resistance, prediabetes, and chronic diseases.
